Wolves in Poland

Grey Wolf, Poland, 2025.

I was looking forward to this trip for quite some time, it was going to be special, not only because of the chances of seeing Grey Wolves, but because Laura was joining me :)

Travel & Accommodation

Getting to Poland took two flights and a long car journey as we ventured into the Bieszczady National Park. Landing in Rzeszów, Poland (via Germany) we headed south and at one point nearly touched the Ukrainian border!. As we moved into the south the landscape was mountainous and with the autumn colours showing: its was stunning.

The accommodation was a lovely log cabin with 5 bedrooms and a living space warmed by a huge log fire. The food was great and the company top notch. Things where set for a great few days!

The hides where as expected, basic in construction but well designed for photographers and comfy seats. They needed to be as where entered before sunrise each day any only left after sunset about 8 hours later!

Golden Eagle

The first subject to show was the Golden Eagle, such a majestic bird. Having seen them before in Spain I was prepared for the size, I think Laura was less so. Over the 5 days we got to see the Eagle on 4 and it was a pleasure each time. The shot you can see opposite with the Autumn colours in the background was one of my favourites.

The Cheeky Bear

On the penultimate day we got our first sighting of the European Brown Bear. He appeared just as it was going dark, picked up a large chunk of food and promptly ran off into the woods. The cheeky guy did not event pose for a few mins :)

Wolves

Wolves, Wolves, Wolves, they turned out to be quite elusive, we had tracks, heard them howl but it was day four before we got our sighting. Laura was the expert spotter and alerted us all to a pair of ears. The wolf appeared on the horizon, trotted through the long grass, onto the track and back again. He posed for just long enough to grab the shot you can see opposite and was then gone. The whole encounter lasted just 58s but was exhilarating none the less. Getting to see such Wolves in the wild was a bucket list item ticked off

Thanks

Thanks as always to Wild Aperture for great organisation, fantastic locations and looking after us from start to finish. Onwards to the next adventure. Also thanks to our fellow photographers for being such great company.
